Surgeon Adoption

Ryan Moore, MD, began using VERASENSE Sensor-Assisted TKA in his practice after completing dual fellowships at the Rothman Institute (Philadelphia, PA) and the Coon Joint Replacement Institute (St. Helena, CA). Dr. Moore believes the  use of technology in his operating room not only allows him to provide the best patient care, but also attracts patients to his practice.

IMPORTANCE IN THE OR

VERASENSE has become an essential part of Dr. Moore’s TKA procedure. “I feel much more confident in balancing the knee, especially after seeing what I’ve learned about the soft tissues through using the sensor,” said Dr. Moore. He believes there are elements of TKA balance a surgeon cannot readily feel by trialing manually, but VERASENSE can point them out easily and with a higher level of accuracy.

“I DON’T USE VERASENSE TO CHECK WHAT I’VE DONE; I USE IT TO GUIDE WHAT I’M DOING.”

Instead of using the sensor simply for verification of his work, Dr. Moore leverages data from VERASENSE early in the operation to understand the balance or imbalance of the patient’s knee and help him decide what adjustments may be needed to arrive at the desired result. By using VERASENSE to balance the soft tissues, Dr. Moore feels he has done the best possible job for the patient. “When patients show back up in the office, I know I’ve done the operation, technically, to the best of my abilities. Knowing I gave them a knee that is technically sound allows me to be confident to look them in the eye and tell them it was done right.”

“OUR HOSPITAL LETS US USE VERASENSE BECAUSE THEY VALUE QUALITY, AND THEY KNOW BY DOING A BETTER JOB, WE WILL ULTIMATELY ATTRACT MORE PATIENTS.”

MARKETING OPPORTUNITY

Dr. Moore’s hospital does a lot of direct to-consumer marketing, and technology used in patient care plays a key role in those efforts. As a result, Dr. Moore has become very busy in his first 3 years in practice – doing more than one thousand joints (about 75% knee) over that time, with his numbers increasing notably each year.

About once a month, the hospital organizes professional seminars where Dr. Moore and other providers have a forum to speak with prospective patients, and VERASENSE plays an important role in his presentation. Dr. Moore explains what he believes are the three critical parts of a well-done knee replacement: doing a low-trauma surgery, cutting the bones straight and balancing the knee. “I explain that many surgeons don’t focus much on balancing – and most that do consider balancing only do so with their eyes and hands to ‘feel’ if it’s right.” He describes how VERASENSE provides a more scientific, more accurate way to balance their knee in order to do a better job and compares it to when a mechanic uses computers to balance and align their car’s wheels and tires for best performance. He feels patients connect with that concept and like the idea of using VERASENSE to help better balance their knee.

“I LOVE VERASENSE. IT ENABLES ME TO ACCURATELY BALANCE A KNEE IN A WAY THAT I DON’T THINK I COULD OTHERWISE, AND MY PATIENTS RECOGNIZE THE VALUE THAT VERASENSE BRINGS TO THEIR CARE, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT’S NOT OFFERED BY EVERY OTHER PROVIDER.”
